Scout Fleet 2002 is the celebration of 90 years of Sea Scouting in the United States. It will involve between 300 and 500 Sea Scouts and leaders, coming in their boats, from states up and down the Eastern Seaboard.
On July 27, 2002, there will be a parade of Sea Scout vessels between the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum and the Statue of Liberty. The parade vessels will be followed by a formal Anniversary Ceremony and a Sea Scout Exposition for the general public, held at the museum's events barge where the Sea Scout vessels will be berthed. Scout Fleet 2002 will give these young mariners a chance to share their program with the nation and get to know Sea Scouts from other parts of the country.
The Boy Scouts of America established a Sea Scouting branch in 1912, as a program for older boys interested in small boat management and seamanship. Today the program serves thousands of young men and women throughout the nation. While this program has always been a small part of the overall scouting movement, it has made a tremendous impact on the young people whose lives it has touched. It is this story that Scout Fleet 2002 will celebrate!
